For over 50 years, Underground Contractors Inc. has been an industry leader in underground and aerial utility contracting. With specialized teams, technology and equipment, they build, repair and maintain underground and aerial utilities, like telecommunication lines. With shops across the Midwest, and a mobile workforce of 170, it’s safe to say that their operations are on the go. Leading their HR team is Human Resources Manager, Kenneth Sochowicz.

As soon as I saw ClockShark connected and shared data with my ADP platform, that made me feel good, and I knew it would be a lot easier.

Challenges

  • The multi-location nature of construction jobs meant simple time solutions wouldn’t cut it
  • Mobile crews couldn’t clock-in on the go without a mobile time tracking system
  • An older time tracking system required time-consuming manual inputs for payroll

How ADP helped

  • Partnering with ClockShark, an ADP Marketplace partner, has equipped Underground Contracting with the technology and integration they need to give their crews access to mobile clocking, and to eliminate their HR team’s manual inputs for payroll.

Unique industry needs

Ken explains that, because most of their crews don’t work at a single job site or shop location, their time clocking needs aren’t like those in other industries. While aerial crews — the ones that work on cables and have big, fancy trucks with bucket-style aerial work platforms — come into the shop in the morning to start their workday, the underground crews don’t. “Our underground crews are assigned a truck they drive, and they take it home at night. They deal with a lot of emergencies, so they need to be able to clock in and out from anywhere.”
