Airtech Automotive: Fueling Growth by Automating Payroll

A mechanic works under the hood of a vehicle.

After years of avoiding payroll, a small business starts to grow quickly. Here is the story of Airtech Automotive, in their own words, and how ADP helped the business realize its full potential.

"I'm Used to Just Being a Small Business"

We are a small automotive-repair shop — my brother does the mechanical, and I do everything else, so we never needed payroll. We always got by doing 1099s for ourselves and whatever extra help we needed to bring in.

But as we grew, not knowing how to do payroll hurt us. I let a good candidate slip through my fingers because I was afraid of not being able to provide things like benefits and direct deposit. I was so used to just being a small business that I actually got scared.

My insurance agent suggested I should offer worker's compensation, because I do work with contractors. "The last thing you want is somebody hurt," he told me. But I was actually prepaying the premiums, which was not ideal. If I forgot to call and say, "Hey I got a new guy," I'd be looking at a bill at the end of the year.

"I'm Going to Give You a Shot"

Then one day the business started booming. I hired my first real employee, and I knew I had to get him on payroll. I couldn't think of anything faster or more convenient than to have a dedicated organization do it.

I made a call to an ADP representative through a referral from my bank partners. Ashley quickly came out to meet me and answer all my questions, and I said, "I'm going to give you a shot."

"It Keeps Track of Everything"

It feels like a giant brick has been lifted off my back every week. All I have to do to perform payroll is gather the hours and go into RUN Powered by ADP®. I love how I can include a bonus or reimburse an employee for gas expenses through the system.

I also started using Pay-by-Pay®, a program available through ADP's licensed affiliate, Automatic Data Processing Insurance Agency, Inc., for worker's compensation. The program lets me pay those premiums on a weekly basis, which is much more convenient than having to prepay my insurance company in full. Now I only pay for what I use, and every other function is done for me.

More importantly, these programs allowed me to hire help without having to worry about additional hassles on the back end — and what a big difference that has made.
