FieldClock, a vertical SaaS company specializing in agriculture technology, uses ADP Embedded Payroll to add payroll directly into its time and labor tracking platform for small farms. These farms previously had to pull hours from FieldClock, review spreadsheets and manually enter payroll data into accounting software not built for agriculture.
By embedding payroll, FieldClock enabled time data to flow directly into payroll, removed exports and duplicate entry, and gave customers more structured compliance handling with access to payroll specialists. The end result is more free time and better quality of life for FieldClock customers outside of day-to-day operations on the farm.
We didn’t want to become a payroll company. We wanted to solve payroll for our customers.

| Challenge | ADP capability | What we did | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complex agricultural pay rules forced farms into manual payroll workarounds. | ADP Embedded Payroll | Embedded payroll inside FieldClock so agriculture-specific time and labor data could support payroll without separate manual workarounds. | Reduced administrative friction for farms by keeping time, labor and payroll workflows closer together in the same platform. |
| Separate time tracking and payroll systems made payroll harder to manage for smaller farms. | ADP Embedded Payroll | Integrated payroll initiation into FieldClock so customers could run payroll from the same system used to manage labor data. | Removed exporting files, separate logins and duplicate entry from the payroll workflow. |
| Building payroll internally would have required significant development, compliance and service investment for an agriculture software provider. | ADP Embedded Payroll | Provided reliable payroll infrastructure, regulatory updates, onboarding support, servicing and money movement infrastructure through ADP’s embedded model. | Introduced payroll capabilities without requiring FieldClock to build and maintain a full payroll organization, tax engine or compliance logic. |
How does embedded payroll help vertical SaaS platforms?
Embedded payroll helps vertical SaaS and other industry-specific software platforms add payroll to an existing customer workflow without becoming a payroll company themselves. FieldClock, a time and labor tracking platform built for farms, uses ADP Embedded Payroll so their customers can run payroll from the same system where labor data already lives. ADP supplies and supports the payroll infrastructure, compliance updates, servicing, onboarding and money movement capabilities while FieldClock maintains its focus on agriculture-specific labor management.
Why embed payroll instead of building it internally?
For most software companies, this approach can expand product value while avoiding the cost and complexity of building a payroll solution from scratch. Embedding payroll can be a better path than building internally when a software provider needs trusted payroll infrastructure, compliance capabilities and service support without taking on the full operational burden. This model works well when payroll is essential to the customer workflow but not the software company’s core business.
Are there other core business functions that can be embedded in addition to payroll?
Yes. Software companies using ADP Embedded Payroll can also provide their customers with seamless add-on solutions for HR, time, insurance1 and retirement that fully integrate with payroll.
