Be Aware of W-2 Related Phishing Scams

Most Recently Reported: February 06, 2017
Date Initially Reported: February 06, 2017

ADP has become aware of a phishing scam that targets company payroll or human resources departments, and we wanted to ensure you were aware of this alert from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regarding the scam.

This scam features emails that use a corporate officer’s name to request employee information from company payroll or human resources departments. Some examples of the fraudster’s requests for information include:

  • W-2 forms
  • Earnings summaries
  • List of employees with full details (name, SSN, date of birth, home address, salary)
  • Wage and tax statements

Many times, phishing emails can be obvious with spelling errors and generic greetings. But in cases like this one, they’re personalized to include names of colleagues, company specific info, or appear to be sent from trusted email accounts. They usually instill a sense of urgency or require your immediate response. It’s important to stay alert for these types of scams.

Protecting client data from malicious activity is a top priority for ADP. If you ever receive a suspicious email that appears to be from ADP, follow the instructions below to report it:

  • Do not click on any links or open any attachments within the message.
  • Forward the email as an attachment to abuse@adp.com.
  • Delete the email.
  • If you clicked any link or opened an attachment in the email, immediately contact your IT support team for further action.
