Tax registration FAQs

What is a tax ID? Do I really need one?

Your business tax ID allows government agencies to identify your business for tax purposes. Tax obligations vary by jurisdiction, so whether you need a tax ID depends on the state your company operates in. If your business operates in more than one state, you will need a tax ID number for each state and/or local jurisdiction.1

Do I need a Federal EIN to get a state tax ID number?

Yes. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses the Federal EIN to identify your business for federal tax purposes. When you apply for a state ID, the state tax department typically requires your Federal EIN as part of the application process. Additionally, not having a Federal EIN can prevent you from accessing resources for your business and fulfilling your federal tax obligations.2

I don't have a Federal EIN. How do I get one?

Getting your Federal EIN is easy! Just complete the IRS's online application.

Do I need a State EIN to get a local tax ID number?

Yes. The state agency uses the State EIN to identify your business for state tax purposes. When you apply for a local ID, the local tax department typically requires your State EIN as part of the application process. Additionally, not having a State EIN can prevent you from accessing resources for your business and fulfilling your state/local tax obligations.
